THE PROTOTYPE: The 1720 locomotives were the most common diesel locomotives ever to run on the Queensland system whilst being one of the most fondly remembered due to the sheer volume of units in traffic and the fact that they could run on ALL lines. As such, they hold a special place in the memories of most QR enthusiasts. Class leader 1720 first made an appearance in Queensland in 1966 and were a higher-powered version of the 1700 class. These units quickly proved themselves in all forms of traffic from branch line mixed goods services, suburban services through to general freight and livestock trains. Most of the class members are still in traffic today as the last 60 tonne locomotives operating regularly on the Queensland Network. Due to being a branch line locomotive, they could run on all lines. These units frequently ran double headed with 1550 and 2400 class locomotives on the “mail” trains, such as the Sunlander, Queenslander and Westlander as well as general frieght. |
