Faced with a Gas Mechanical with a fried motor and no spares from Bachmann UK we’ve designed this motor upgrade that replaces the original motor with a powerful and smooth 12v DC coreless motor.
NOTE: This is not a clip in direct replacement some modification to the loco is required.
To install it you need to unclip the PCB, remove the motor and then remove some of the cast motor mounts. The printed block holds the motor at the right meshing distance for the gears and is glued into place. If you wish to use the factory electrics add them to the top of the block with a sticky pad. Potentially handy aside – the PCB sits a bit lower so there is more room if you want to add sound

The model in the photos is a Gas Mech Chassis with a Backwoods Miniatures body kit that ran for many years with the original motor, but eventually it died, and a replacement wasn’t available.
The coreless motor runs on next to no current and is super smooth. Since conversion this loco has run many hours on my demo layout at exhibitions. This upgrade was planned as part of a suite of parts to provide replacement gears, fly cranks and motors that never made it to the website because every move was undermined by a third party diverting potential sales and killing the viability |
