The DC ones are fine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5404\" src=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent-768x396.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bent.jpg 1489w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Naturally, Dapol have used their own Imperium Function decoder and the problem is its a bit too fat. It fits between the lighting strip and the roof and forces the lighting strip to bend down which in turn stops the roof sitting down.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5407\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5407\" class=\"wp-image-5407\" src=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fat-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dapol Decoder<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Measuring the Dapol decoder we find its 3.43mm thick whilst the gap between the lighting strip and the roof is 2.5mm tops.<\/p>\n<p>Having investigated this I can offer you two solutions depending on whether you have already bought the coaches or are about to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Already got the coaches?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5401 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-300x114.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-1024x389.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-768x292.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-1536x584.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Notches-2048x778.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The ceiling\/lighting strip has tabs on the end that are suppose to locate in these slots in the coach end moulding. They stop the lighting strip going lower which means the roof is forced up and can&#8217;t clip home.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly these notches stop the lighting bar sagging but it seems pretty rigid so my solution for an already DCC coach is to trim the tabs off the lighting strip allowing it to go a bit lower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5417\" src=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp-1024x961.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp-768x721.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ngtrains.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Comp.jpg 1448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>My heart was a bit in my mouth doing this as the lighting strip is PCB with circuit pathways in it but I couldn&#8217;t see any reason they might go right to the ends. There was only one way to find out so I sacrificed one of my coaches so you don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n<p>I cut the tabs off with a fine bladed piercing saw and then cleaned it up with a fine file.<\/p>\n<p>With that done I refitted the decoder, screwed the lighting strip back in and tried the roof on the coach. The roof seated fully and you can&#8217;t tell looking through the windows that the ceiling is any lower. Its certainly less obtrusive than a roof that doesn&#8217;t fit!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Still to buy the coaches?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As I said before the DC lit versions are fine but if you want DCC control so you can turn the lights on and off and control the dimming of them but haven&#8217;t bought them yet then I have a solution.<\/p>\n<p>First buy the DC version of your coach. Then buy a ZIMO MX689 function decoder.
